The tradition continues
The week 10th to 16th of March 2008 sees the 29th annual rally of military vehicle enthusiasts held on the banks of the Murray at Corowa in Southern New South Wales.
The theme for 2008 is “Year of the Tracked Vehicle” and collectors and restorers from all over Australia have been preparing their prized vehicles for the event which culminates in a parade through the town of Corowa to the airport on the morning of Saturday March 15th.
The streets will echo to what is arguably the largest gathering of privately owned World War 2 and post-war armour ever seen in the Southern Hemisphere with such rarities as Stuart tanks, Bren Carriers, Half-tracks and, at the airport a unique WW2 Russian T34 tank, recently rebuilt to running condition by the Army Museum at Bandiana.
In addition to the tracked types there will be the usual collection of amphibious Jeeps and DUKWs, along with other transport vehicles such as Ford and Chevrolet Blitzes, Studebakers, GMCs, and a range of motorcycles including Harley-Davidson, BMW, BSA, and Zundapp.
The main street will have the centre fixings removed so the tanks can use the middle of the road and a specially designed traffic management plan has been put in place to ensure the safety of participants and onlookers as well as prevention of damage to road surfaces.
At the Corowa Airport a specific area has been set aside so people can see the tanks in action, and several WW2-era warbirds are expected to attend.
All up some 170 ex military vehicles are expected to come to make this a year to remember.
The best place to see the parade is on the hill in Sanger Street. The parade will then travel to the airport which is on the Jerilderie Road.
